SPRING 2021 RESIDENT ARTISTS

ERIN ROSE COFFIN

These poems were written with a deep commitment to vulnerability, by the grace of the time and the physical/emotional space offered during this residency. They are concerned with memory and record-keeping, as well as with the desire for everyday moments to slow down or pause to allow for all significance to be wrung out like a dishrag. The poet would like to invite any and all attendees to make themselves at home.

WABWILA MUGALA

My work pulls from the various experiences I have had and the environments that I have existed in throughout my life, it is a singular one. However, these images and graphics layer together to paint a culmination of ties I have to different cultures and communities. Understanding that my entry point may not be far from those who find my work familiar or unfamiliar.

HANNAH SHABAN

There is no set culture for the first generation individual. The more I explore ideas of culture and the cultivation of identity, especially in the Arab diaspora, the more aware I am of how varied and complex that relationship is from one person to the next; from the language you learn, the cuisine you cook, to the people and unique objects you surround yourself with in an effort to mimic ‘home.’ From Under the Grapevine is a reflection on the experience of dispersal in diasporic communities and efforts to negotiate what we were and what we are becoming. It physically elevates Middle Eastern design simultaneously addressing the over commodification of culture and its contribution to the dilution of diversity.
